Abstract This book first provides the context and current legal practice of divorce in Australia. It then provides an analysis and discussion of the findings of a longitudinal study of the adaptations of parents to divorce and the outcomes for various groups. Drawing on 500 in-depth interviews at two points in time, it follows the lives of divorced parents of dependent children for five to eight years after separation. Overview chapters by Kathleen Funder include: Parents, divorce and economic recovery, which presents an overview of trends and sources of data, and describes the study and the book; Conclusions, which includes a resume of the policy questions addressed, the key findings of the study, and recommendations. Other chapters are individually indexed. They are: Drawing a longbow on marriage and divorce, by Kathleen Funder and Margaret Harrison; The law's response to new challenges, by Margaret Harrison; Family re-formation: a key adjustment strategy, by Ruth Weston and Siew-Ean Khoo; Housing after marriage breakdown: a longer-term perspective, by Siew-Ean Khoo; Women's post-separation employment and reliance on social security, by Kathleen Funder; Patterns of maintenance payment over time, by Margaret Harrison; Income circumstances of parents and children: a longitudinal view, by Ruth Weston; A model of the effects of the Child Support Scheme, by Ruth Weston; Exploring the access-maintenance nexus, by Kathleen Funder; Principles, practice and problems in property and income transfers, by Margaret Harrison, Kathleen Funder and Peter McDonald; There is more to life than economics, by Ruth Weston and Kathleen Funder.
